Lampaert schuift op in klassement Dunkerque
Yves Lampaert, die deze week zijn eerste wedstrijd rijdt sinds het einde van de voorjaarsklassiekers op de Velodrome van Roubaix, maakte op de voorlaatste dag van de Quatre Jours de Dunkerque een mooie sprong in het algemeen klassement. De pittige etappe rond Cassel zorgde voor tijdsverschillen tussen de vele kanshebbers op de eindzege.
De rit was getekend door maar liefst twaalf gecategoriseerde beklimmingen, waaronder de aankomst heuvelop na meer dan 170 kilometer koers. Er werd volop aangevallen door renners die hoopten het traditionele scenario te doorbreken, maar uiteindelijk draaide het toch uit op een strijd op de laatste klim.
Een versnelling van Samuel Watson (INEOS Grenadiers) in de slotmeters van Cassel leverde de Brit zowel de ritzege als de leiderstrui op. Yves Lampaert liet zich op de 1 km lange slotklim, met een gemiddeld stijgingspercentage van 8,6%, van zijn beste kant zien. De voormalige Belgisch kampioen kwam als eerste renner van Soudal Quick-Step over de streep en schoof veertien plaatsen op in het klassement. Met nog één etappe te gaan staat hij op slechts zes seconden van de top tien.
