Evenepoel richt zich op tijdrit Algarve
Na een dag in de bergen trok de Volta ao Algarve naar de kust, waar de sprinters aan het einde vochten voor de ritzege. Een kopgroep trok al vroeg op avontuur, maar werd in de laatste kilometers ingerekend.
De sprintvoorbereiding verliep opnieuw chaotisch. Een valpartij in de laatste kilometer deed verschillende sprinttreinen ontsporen. De ritzege ging uiteindelijk naar Wout Van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike), terwijl Remco Evenepoel even later zonder schade samen met zijn ploegmaats over de streep bolde.
De wereldkampioen tijdrijden richt zich nu op de 22,2 kilometer lange tijdrit van zaterdag. Evenepoel staat na de rit van vrijdag vier seconden achter de leider van de koers en maakt dus zaterdag kans op de leiderstrui. Zondag volgt de afsluitende rit met aankomst op de Alto do Malhão.
