The Wolfpack was prominent at one of the season’s final one-day races.
The Belgian cycling season concluded Tuesday afternoon at Binche-Chimay-Binche, the 203km race which brought a nice mix of uphill parts and cobblestones that spiced it up. Despite coming at the start without a sprinter, Soudal Quick-Step was keen on leaving its mark on the race, so our team went on the attack moments after the start.
Warre Vangheluwe joined the first breakaway of the day, a large one which had the numbers, but only a small gap on the peloton, that the latter erased after 30 kilometers. Shortly after, Bert Van Lerberghe rolled the dice and made it into the second leading group of the day, who got to enjoy more time at the front before experiencing the same outcome as the first one.
The sprinters’ teams were favourites to fight for victory, but they had to work hard in order to have the much-desired mass gallop at the end of the day, as attacks continued to come until the final ten kilometers, when the last of these was reeled in. The victory at this 38th edition went to Jordi Meeus (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe), while Yves Lampaert – runner-up here a couple of years ago – concluded the race as the best placed Soudal Quick-Step rider.
