The young Italian scored a solo success in Belgium.
Omloop Mandel-Leie-Schelde, one of the most important kermesses in Belgium, witnessed the tenth Soudal Quick-Step Devo Team victory of the season. The man who helped our feeder team reach this milestone was Renato Favero, the 20-year-old who celebrated his first success in the U23 ranks.
Favero, fifth just a few weeks ago in Hel van Voerendaal, was one of the 20-odd riders who managed who booked a place in the main breakaway of the day, which formed 25 kilometers into the 192km race. The gap they opened turned out to be enough to hold off the chasers, especially as the escapees worked well together the entire time. On the last lap, with three kilometers to go, the Italian took a flyer and quickly put some daylight into his former companions, arriving alone at the finish in Meulebeke.
“I am happy with this win. I had a good feeling from the start, was attentive the whole time and joined the large group that went away. We collaborated well there and built a solid margin over the peloton. A couple of riders tried to zip clear in the finale, but things remained together until three kilometers from the line, when I attacked and pushed hard without looking back. Finishing alone and having plenty of time to celebrate this success was beautiful, it’s a great day that I will always remember”, an elated Renato said before the podium ceremony.
