The young Belgian was the strongest in Zolder this weekend.
Senne Hulsmans put behind him a tough period of his career on Sunday, when he powered to an emotional success on home soil, at the Heusden-Zolder one-day race. It was the fifth edition, one that took place over a 118km course, and the 21-year-old started with extra motivation in what was his first appearance in more than three months for the Soudal Quick-Step Devo Team.
Hulsmans – winner of a West Bohemia Tour stage last year – was present in all the groups that got away, putting in a strong effort each time. In the end, after the peloton reacted several times, a ten-man group managed to jump clear and opened a gap which they kept until the line. There, our rider outsprinted Andreas Goeman (Cycling Team Fietsen Gaethofs) and delivered the Devo Team’s fifth success of the season.
“I’m very happy with my first win of the season, especially as this one feels really special. After knee surgery and three months of rehab, it feels incredible to be on the top spot of the podium. It’s been a long and tough road, but I never stopped believing. I was in all the moves today and still had enough to sprint in the finale. This victory means a lot – it’s a true reward for all the hard work, perseverance, and patience. I’m proud to be back”, a delighted Senne said after Sunday’s victory.
