Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team rider Gert Steegmans knew a seven rider breakaway had potential of making it to the finish in the 172.8km La Vuelta a Espana Stage 13 on Friday.

He attacked with two other riders, hoping to catch onto the break for a chance to contest the stage. Unfortunately, the trio couldn't stay away from the peloton for long in the final kilometers, and the break was able to maintain more than a 40" gap going into 4km to go.

That is when BMC Racing Team rider Steve Cummings attacked the escape group. While Juan Antonio Flecha (Team Sky ProCycling) and Cameron Meyer (Orica-GreenEDGE) did their best to try and catch him, he held them off for the solo victory. Meyer was 2nd and Flecha was 3rd.

Steegmans was the top OPQS finisher, in 44th place. The team looks next to a 149.2km Stage 14 on Saturday.
