Breakaway holds off the bunch on stage 10.

The race continued Tuesday without Remco Evenepoel, but with horrible weather conditions that made the riders’ legs heavy as they travelled to Viareggio. With the hilly first part of the stage, the low temperatures and the rain falling hard since the morning, the day favoured a breakaway, and the first to show their intentions were the Soudal Quick-Step duo of Mattia Cattaneo and Louis Vervaeke. The two pushed hard on the roads to Passo delle Radici, and joined by other riders, they managed to build a promising 45-second gap.

For a moment there, it looked like the peloton would let this move go, but some teams had other plans and after a fierce chase they managed to bring the quintet back. Shortly after, five other riders rode away, and this proved to be the winning move, three of them making it to the finish, where Magnus Cort (EF Education-EasyPost) took the win.

The peloton arrived one minute later, and Davide Ballerini got involved in the sprint, finishing in 13th place after another rider cut across with 150 meters to go, forcing him to break. In the general classification, Ilan Van Wilder recorded a big jump of twelve places, making his way in the top 20.
