The 99th edition of Milano-Torino began from Magenta, 30 kilometers east of Lombardy's capital, and took on familiar roads, culminating with a double ascent of Superga (4.9 kilometers, 9.1% average gradient), where the day-long breakaway – despite heading the chasers by more than six minutes at one point – got caught by the strung-out peloton.
Fifteen men got clear over the top of Superga, which since the revival of the race in 2012, has become the main attraction, its double-digit gradients deciding each time the winner. On the second ascent of the famous hill, five riders attacked, and from that group, Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) emerged victorious, beating Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) after an attack launched with little over one kilometer to go.
The Italian one-day races will continue Thursday with the 102nd edition of Gran Piemonte, where World Tour team standings leader Quick-Step Floors will be present with a team consisting of Kasper Asgreen, Eros Capecchi, Laurens De Plus, stagiaires Mikkel Honoré and Barnabás Peák, Florian Sénéchal and Pieter Serry, our best placed rider in Milano-Torino.
